Motorman’s Tips and tricks:
Safety Tip Of The Week: Right Of Way

The most common motorcycle crash that is not the motorcycle riders fault occurs when a vehicle turns left in front of the motorcyclist. Most of the time, this incident happens at an intersection. In fact, the vast majority of crashes involving all vehicles, occur at intersections and involve a violation of one or more vehicles right of way.

Why are there so many violations of the right of way at intersections? One of the reasons is that a large percentage of people on the road today are unaware of who has the legal right of way. I’ve conducted traffic stops on people who turned left in front of me and they almost always state, “I had the green light”. When I tell them the vehicles going straight also have the green light and the turning vehicle has to yield the right of way to those vehicles, their shocked by this revelation. Another reason for this type of violation is many drivers, especially the elderly, can not judge the speed and distance of oncoming traffic. Add to this the fact that most drivers aren’t conditioned to look for motorcycles, and you understand why so many motorcycle fatalities happen at intersections.

I recently heard about such a crash, only this one caused three motorcyclists to go down.  Here’s what happened: A group of 8 bikers were riding in staggered formation towards an intersection with a traffic signal. The signal light was green as the formation approached the intersection. Suddenly a car turned left in front of the pack. The first rider licked the rear brake and went down. The second rider who was in the right portion of the lane also locked his rear tire but then released the rear brake, which of course cause a high side crash. The 3rd rider attempted to swerve but struck the tumbling motorcycle and rider in front of him. The left turning vehicle kept on going possibly not even aware of the carnage he or she had caused. Though there were some serious injuries, thankfully everyone survived.

Obviously the person who caused the crash was the left turning vehicle who violated the right of way. The fact remains though, that the entire crash could have been avoided.

Here’s how to avoid this from happening to you. First, when approaching an intersection slow down a bit. If you’re riding in a group and you’re the lead bike, make sure you’re looking at least 12 seconds ahead of your motorcycle. As the lead rider, if you see a vehicle in the intersection who is waiting to turn left, count on the fact that he will do so, and at the worst possible time. Cover your brakes, hit the brakes at least enough to alert the riders behind you that they should slow down. If you’re towards the back of the pack, you should also be looking as far ahead as possible. Don’t stay focused on the bike just in front of you. The riders towards the back should actually be covering their brakes as all times since they don’t have as good a view of the traffic ahead. Covering the brakes saves you one second. That’s 60 feet at 40 miles per hour.

What else can you do? Practice your braking skills as often as possible. Make sure to use both brakes when practicing. Also practice braking, the releasing the brakes and swerving. Remember you can’t brake hard, and swerve at the same time. It’s one or the other. When riding in traffic, play the “what if” game. What if that car turns left in front of me? Have a plan just in case. Your life may depend on it.
